Alley Pond Environmental Center Youth Volunteer Program
Alley Pond Environmental Center (APEC) in Alley Pond Park accepts high school students as youth volunteers, whether for school credit or to gain work experience. Volunteers help with animal care (feeding, grooming, and cleaning enclosures), education assistance for early childhood and elementary science classes, building maintenance (plus trail work in summer), and special events. APEC provides guidance, training, and supervision.
Semesters and deadlines (volunteers are accepted for one semester):
- Spring (February – June): apply by December 1
- Summer (July – September): apply by May 1
- Fall (October – January): apply by August 1
Schedule: fall and spring volunteers come one day a week after school (Monday–Friday, 3:30–4:30 pm). Summer volunteers come up to three days a week, attend an orientation in late June, and must be available for the six-week program in July–August.
Eligibility:
- High school students ages 15–17 (the application says 15–18). No one under 15 can be accepted.
- Unpaid volunteer position
How to apply: type the Youth Volunteer Application (handwritten applications aren’t accepted), get a parent or guardian’s signature, and email it to contact@alleypond.org by the deadline. After the deadline, applicants are contacted by email for a group interview, and accepted volunteers attend an orientation. Deadlines are strictly enforced.
