City Tech College Now STEM Research Academy
The College Now STEM Research Academy at City Tech is a two-part program for NYC public school students from partner schools under-served by science programs. Students build college-level research skills through authentic science inquiry: a free spring pre-college research course, followed by the chance to apply for a paid summer research internship with City Tech faculty.
Cost: free. College Now covers tuition, books, and supplies.
Spring: Introduction to Science Research course, Saturdays 10 am – 2 pm (15 weeks, February – May; hybrid, on campus and remote). Students learn to formulate research questions, design experiments, and read scientific literature, with lab work and field research around Brooklyn on a biology or chemistry topic.
Summer: students who complete the spring course can apply for a six-week Research Internship (Monday–Thursday, 9 am – 4 pm) with a $1,575 stipend. Interns are matched with a City Tech faculty researcher and lab team, do their own short research project, and present it at the Summer Science Symposium at the American Museum of Natural History. Summer participants also get a City Tech ID card, OMNY cards, and free lunch on Mondays.
Eligibility:
- Sophomores and juniors at an NYC public high school (the program is designed for students from City Tech partner schools)
- Preferred: an overall average of 80+, ELA Regents 75+ (or SAT Reading 480+), 80+ on the Living Environment Regents and on one Math Regents, and passing all other Regents taken so far. Students who haven’t taken Regents or the SAT are evaluated on their transcript grades.
How to apply: complete the online application, then email CollegeNow@CityTech.Cuny.Edu a packet with the signed Parent Permission and Consent Form, the signed Field Trip Waiver (pages 1–5), a one- to two-page typed essay, and your most recent transcript (not a report card). One recommendation from a STEM mentor, teacher, or guidance counselor must be emailed directly to the same address. Last year’s deadline was Friday, December 12, 2025.
